Enhancing Patient Safety in NHS England’s Healthcare Revolution

Since the summer of 2022, NHS England has been driving its ‘Outcome and Registries Programme’ which includes the creation of the groundbreaking ‘Medical Device Outcome Registry’ (MDOR). This initiative aims to consolidate medical specialities and therapeutic areas into a unified outcome registry platform, prioritising them based on patient and clinical risk factors. The primary objectives are to enhance traceability and elevate patient reported outcomes (PROMs) by refining established registry processes.

NHS England has worked to surmount technical challenges and is transitioning existing registries to this innovative system. For instance, NHS England’s operational pelvic floor registry is undergoing enhancements and integration with the Outcome Registries platform.

MDOR compiles detailed data on high-risk (Class III/IIb) medical device procedures like cochlea implants, mesh implants, and breast implants, as its initial phase of roll-out.

Led by NHS England’s Outcomes and Registries programme in collaboration with NEC Software Solutions, MDOR will capture information on two million procedures and over 10 million unique devices annually across the NHS and independent healthcare sector. Implementation will roll out in select hospitals, with a phased approach scheduled for completion by Spring 2024.

How does Amplitude Clinical Outcomes contribute to this?

Amplitude stands out as a leading and visionary provider of PROMs (National or PHIN), possessing data capture capabilities that effortlessly align with the Outcome and Registry Programmes. This alignment offers a multitude of benefits:

PROMs Collection for Informed Healthcare Decisions

PROMs are collected across all specialities thanks to Amplitude’s ability to provide clinicians and hospitals with a flexible, adaptable platform that can integrate with existing EPR and theatre systems to automate workflows and help monitor patients remotely. Amplitude’s ability to electronically upload data to national and international registries helps reduce administrative burdens. All data is retained by the hospital to empower healthcare providers with data-driven insights to make informed decisions.

Tracking Medical Device Efficacy

Amplitude’s electronic PROMs collection enables clinicians to easily review their patients’ clinical scores in conjunction with quality-of-life questionnaires and clinical data. This comprehensive view supports clinicians in gauging problem severity, assessing the influence of various treatment pathways on patient outcomes, and pinpointing those individuals requiring prompt attention. Furthermore, clinicians can swiftly identify irregular data patterns through monthly data reports, ensuring a proactive approach to patient care.

Ensuring Compliance

This initiative holds significant implications for healthcare regulatory compliance. Integrating medical device outcome data with PROMs data is instrumental in ensuring devices meet rigorous safety and efficacy standards. Amplitude works with its customers to optimise workflows to maximise patient touch points so it is simple for patients to complete their PROMs, whatever stage of the pathway they may be at.

The Result

Amplitude Clinical Outcomes helps elevate healthcare quality and patient care through the seamless provision of PROMs and clinical data, enhancing data-driven processes and traceability. As the program advances and the platform takes shape, it holds the potential to make a hugely positive impact on healthcare outcomes and the effectiveness of medical devices, ushering in an exciting era of healthcare prioritising safety, accountability, and clinical excellence.
